The Colonial British Indian Restaurants; A British Sydney Tourist Attraction. The Poms Have Voted!

The Colonial British Indian Restaurants are found in the region of Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. Locals and tourists of Sydney feast on a robust blend of eastern spice and western cuisine at two popular locations; The Colonial Darlinghurst and The Colonial Neutral Bay.

Today we’ll look at why British travellers and British expats living in Sydney are giving The Colonial restaurant the travellers choice for Indian dining in Sydney.

From inception; The Colonial has been remastering the British Indian culinary flavours to bring you what some guests call “the best British Indian curry house in Sydney”.

Found spread across the UK, a range of British-Indian curries and flavours are being served up as the Brits’ toast to their national dish of Indian curry with hot chips. Why wouldn’t they love a delicious curry any time of year?

Most traditional Indian restaurants across Sydney more than likely do not serve hot chips as a side on the Indian dining menu. Traditionally, UK curry houses and Indian restaurants would serve chips on a menu – simply put; it’s the way the Brits’ do it.

Hot chips at an Indian curry house in Sydney is now possible, you just need to visit The Colonial Darlinghurst or The Colonial Neutral Bay to enjoy a side of hot chips; perfect as dippers' to your main Indian curry dish and sauce.

Like most cuisines, flavours, cooking technique and style will differ from city to city, region to region – and there is no exception to the rule. Today, Australia celebrates The Colonial Restaurants as one of the most popular British Indian curry houses in Sydney and North Sydney regions!

‘Hands down - best Indian food eaten to date!! Can’t understand any negative reviews!! This is / was seriously the best Indian food that i have ever eaten - massive statement however very true. Entrees of Chicken Tikka, Tandoori prawns and seekh kofta were to die for. Mains - butter chicken - lamb rogan-josh and beef vindaloo were absolutely smashing!! Naan breads were to die for! No room for desert however was very tempted. This will now be our go to for Indian food! Also, Ayush and Mahima were our host for the night. Really beautiful people, smiling and very caring towards our two youngsters. Thanks guys and see you next time!”

MattC1995 from Leeds, United Kingdom had amazing things to say about The Colonial British Indian Restaurant in Darlinghurst when he visited on 17 April 2018

Perfect for our occasion. Having all yearned for a taste of home, the colonial not only provided the perfect send off for our friend, but also gave us some home comforts. As a group we had visited various other places for Indians, but none have quite matched the similarity to the UK like this curry house in Darlinghurst, Sydney. As a group of 10, we expected some delays for both food and drink, but neither were noticeable at all. The staff were very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu, helping out some of my friends with choosing how mild/spicy they wanted their curry. There was a nice, large selection of both vegetarian and meat options, giving everyone a choice of what to eat. The food itself was lovely and tasty, and came out on the main part together, allowing us to all enjoy it together. My Tikka masala was particularly nice and good in size, especially complemented by the large bowls of rice….”

soulie s dined and shared her raving five-star review of The Colonial British Indian Restaurant in Neutral Bay on 21 February 2015

“The BEST Indian Restaurant on Sydney’s North Shore by a long shot? We tried out The Colonial on its opening day, and sure there were a few teething problems on the service side of things, but the food is to die for and well worth the wait. Over the past 2 weeks we have been back on 3 occasions, on Sunday past we went along with the family 10 people in the party, and all collectively and singularly gave The Colonial a big thumbs up!! The Menu is just right the Curries, Dals, Breads and Vegetarian options were commended by each and everyone of our family who all had 2 and 3 dishes. That amount of dining adventure across 10 people proving in its self that THE COLONIAL very obviously know how to run an Dining experience in what is a classy looking establishment, with excellent, friendly and informative staff. You only need exercise some patience, sit back and relax to enjoy what is The BEST Indian Restaurant on Sydneys North Shore by a long shot?”

An online reviewer titled World-Traveller79 from Southern England shared a five-star review of The Colonial Darlinghurst on 4 March 2018

“A very good Indian Restaurant. The restaurant is easy to find, just off William Street, and well worth the effort serving excellent Indian food at competitive prices. Instead of having a menu like a phone book it offers a more than adequate selection of delicious Indian dishes served by friendly, helpful staff. The restaurant is attractively appointed with plenty of space between tables for a comfortable and enjoyable dining experience…”

Neil R just couldn’t help but rave online at how much he loved his dining experience at The Colonial Neutral Bay.

“Calling all Poms! Finally,... An 'English' Indian! If you are a Pom you know what I mean. This is a great Indian that tastes just like Indians did back in the UK. Highly recommend you go have a meal - we went shortly after it opened - absolutely fantastic. Service a little slow but really great team. Go support it my colonial countrymen (and women)

Steph R travelling from London, United Kingdom reviewed The Colonial Indian Restaurant in Darlinghurst on 26 January 2018 with 5 golden stars

“Thank you! Thank you so much for a wonderful evening with absolutely delicious food! My boyfriend and I are doing ‘Veganuary’ so we are undertaking a challenge to go vegan for the whole month from being omnivores. It’s been challenging especially when eating out! It was explained to us that all food is cooked from scratch and they’d be able to cater for us, but they went above and beyond. As new ‘vegans’ we’re not very good at knowing what we can and can’t eat but the staff helped us create dishes to suit our palate as well as our dietary requirements. It was bloody fantastic! We’ve also previously had food delivered from here prior to our vegan ventures with a big bunch of veggie and non-veggie friends and it was soooo good! The friends still ask me ‘where did we get that curry from?! See you very soon and thanks again!”
